Kawabata Evaluation System

Kawabata Evaluation System – Kato Tech Co., Ltd., Japan

The Kawabata Evaluation System, commonly referred to as KES, is a globally recognized method of systematically assessing various fabric characteristics related to touch and comfort. It is used to quantify the tactile qualities of fabrics that play a crucial role in determining the quality and performance of textiles in end-use applications.

This was developed by Kato Tech in collaboration with Dr. Sueo Kawabata of Kyoto University and Dr. Masako Niwa of Nara Women’s University. Though it was originally developed for the fabric industry, the KES has found application in various other industries such as cosmetics, food, paper, automobile, and much more.

Parameters from Kawabata Evaluation System

The KES encompasses a series of instruments and testing methods designed to measure different aspects of fabric hand-feel. Some key parameters evaluated by this system include:

Tensile & Shear

These two parameters play an important role in determining a fabric’s texture. The KES-FB1-A evaluates tensile strength and shear strength by load control and deformation control methods respectively. The data obtained from this system includes tensile/shear rigidity, tensile energy, elongation rates, and recoverability. It is used for a variety of samples including cloth, paper, non-woven fabric, and films.

Bending

The KES-FB2-A has a high-sensitivity detector for evaluating torsional movement. The output from the system is data for bending rigidity and recoverability.

Compression

The KES-G5 performs mechanical compression of fabrics and other materials to generate numeric data for linearity, work, and recoverability of compression.

Friction

Surface friction is an important tactile property that influences the ease of fabric movement against the skin or other surfaces. The KES-FB4-A has a ring-type detector to quantify parameters such as mean frictional coefficient and surface roughness.

Heat/Cool

The KES-F7, also commonly referred to as the Thermo Labo, is used to evaluate the sensation of coldness or warmth when a fabric comes in contact with skin. ¬It does this by peak heat flux. Recently, the Thermo Labo has been replaced by the KES-QM which offers several advantages over its predecessor. The KES-QM comes in a smaller form factor and hence occupies a minimal footprint. With it, up to 10 measurements can be performed automatically.
