How does a Brix meter work?

A Brix meter is an automatic instrument which calculates the Brix percentage in the sample by determining the critical angle of total reflection. This working is based on Snell’s law.

The instrument setup consists of a light source, usually an LED bulb, that is focused onto a prism surface by means of a lens system. The prism surface is where the liquid sample is dropped onto. When light passes through the liquid sample, a part of the light is reflected onto a linear arrangement of photodiodes, thereby creating a shadow line. The refractive index and the Brix percentage are directly related to the position of the shadow line on the photodiodes. The internal software correlates the position of the shadow line to Brix percentage and displays the value on a LCD display.

Kyoto Electronics Manufacturing (KEM) Co., Ltd.manufacture a variety of portable instruments such as refractometers, density meters, and Brix meters. The Brix meter, BX1, is an automatic, digital system with an LCD display. This instrument is equipped with temperature compensation and it can be used to test samples at any temperature between 10 °C and 75 °C.

It has just one button and does not require any training or getting used to for you to operate it.

All it needs is two AAA batteries for you to take over 30,000 readings. The auto-inactivity detection feature definitely helps by automatically switching off the instrument when it has not been put to use for a long time. The instrument has an IP65 casing that makes it splash-proof. This casing also enables washing of the prism once measurement of one sample is over.

Calibrating a portable Brix meter 

Calibrating any instrument is a must, especially if it is used for quality control. Calibrating your instrument helps you notice any error that would have crept into your instrument as a result of wear and tear over the years.

Calibration is the process of comparing a known measurement, called the standard, with the measurement obtained using your instrument at hand. In the case of calibrating a portable Brix meter, the standard in most cases is distilled water. On dropping a few drops of distilled water onto the prism, the LCD display in the instrument must show a reading of 0 Brix.
